President Bongbong Marcos to NDRRMC: “Let me wait for your resolution, tingnan ko.”
PRESIDENT BONGBONG MARCOS — The President is considering placing the Philippines under a state of calamity due to Severe Tropical Storm “Paeng”.
The President raised the idea after virtually presiding over an NDRRMC meeting on Saturday, October 29, when he was informed about the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm “Paeng”, which battered many parts of the Philippines and left at least 45 people dead.
Based on the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the President is keen on declaring a “national state of calamity due to the effects, damage and projected impacts by Severe Tropical Storm Paeng for a period of one year, unless earlier lifted” as well as to “accept offers of international assistance based on needs”.
“Sabagay maraming regions ang affected. That already justifies for state of calamity,” the President said. “Let me wait for your resolution, tingnan ko.”
But for now, President Bongbong Marcos said that Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARRM) and the Bicol Region (Region 5) are the regions that are “going to really (be) put under state of calamity”.
The President ordered Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. to help BARMM officials access their calamity fund.

President Bongbong Marcos also lamented the high death toll from the onslaught of STS “Paeng” as he asked why the affected residents weren’t immediately evacuated. He also believed that the number of casualties could have been lower if people were immediately evacuated.
“That’s something that we’re going to study a little bit more after we have attended to the immediate concerns,” the President said.
