PNP: “Napakabuti po ng intention ng mga kapulisan. At of course, the sincerity is always there.”
PNP — Following the killing of broadcaster Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa, the Philippine National Police said that it will continue to hold dialogues with media workers on safety issues.
Police Lt. Gen. Rhodel Sermonia, officer-in-charge of the Office of the Deputy Chief for Administration, said in a chance interview with reporters on Saturday that the PNP will continue the media dialogues that Interior Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. started.
Sermonia also assured media workers of the PNP’s best intentions, urging media workers to ask for police assistance if they feel threatened.
“Napakabuti po ng intention ng mga kapulisan. At of course, the sincerity is always there. Hindi naman po pwede natin sabihan na ngayon lang ang senseridad. Sana mapalakas pa natin ang ating partnership, ugnayan kung baga,” Sermonia said.
According to a report, members of the media participated in a dialogue with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday to discuss the safety of journalists.
National Press Club of the Philippines President Lydia Bueno, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) President Herman Basbano, and KBP Chairman Ruperto S. Nicdao, Jr. were among those who joined in the dialogue.
Nicdao said that it’s a “very good way” of building trust between the media and PNP and DILG. Nicdao also attributed the mistrust to “rogue elements” in the Philippine National Police.
Basbano, for his part, said that there should be mechanisms in order to ensure that such visitations don’t have abuses.
“Ramdam ng National Press Club of the Philippines na mayroon tayong kakampi sa kapulisan at pinakita nila yung aktibong pagtupad sa kanilang tungkulin na, batay po sa kautusan ng ating PNP Chief Azurin na lumapit sila sa media,” Bueno said.
