During the Senate hearing on the 2023 budget of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) on Tuesday, October 18, Estrada proposed a ban on Korean dramas, claiming that Filipino artists are losing opportunities as local audiences favor more foreign works.

According to him, if the country continues to air Koreanovelas, lots of Filipino artists lose their jobs and income.

Estrada’s remark elicited a mixed response online, with netizens arguing that there are other ways to support the local industry without prohibiting foreign works.

Atty. Gideon V. Peña, a prominent lawyer said: “Banning Kdrama and other foreign productions will not improve Filipino-made shows.”

He also brought up the non-renewal of the ABS-CBN franchise.

It can be recalled that it was on May 5, 2020, National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and Solicitor General Jose Calida issued a cease-and-desist order to ABS-CBN.

On July 10, 2020, members of the House of Representatives, particularly the Committee on Legislative Franchises, voted 70–11 to deny the franchise application of ABS-CBN, citing several issues with the network’s franchise.

Following the closure of the Kapamilya Network, a lot of ABS-CBN employees lost their jobs.

“If the gov’t wants to support the local industry, it can do so by providing better tax & other financial incentives. Promote free competition too. That means giving ABS-CBN its franchise,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada has clarified his earlier statements about Korean dramas, saying he uttered such “out of frustration”.
