ZUBIRI — Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri thanked Senator Francis Tolentino for a “job well done” on sugar import probe.

Senator Tolentino is the chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee.

On Tuesday, the Senate President said that Senator Tolentino handled the Senate hearing with professionalism and also got the details from witnesses very fast.

He also thanked the senator for conducting the public hearing on the issue he brought out about the sugar importation fiasco.

To recall, it was last month when the Senate President delivered a privilege speech denouncing an order of the Sugar Regulatory Board (SRB) to import 300,000 metric tons of sugar.

Malacanang had claimed that it directed the Sugar Regulatory Board to draft an import plan but what came out as Sugar Order No. 4 allowing the importation of 300,000 metric tons of sugar.

The Senate President said that the Senate would act on the possible Senate committee report to be issued by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee. He also said that in all the meetings on the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), “there are recommendations that will make changes with the system”.

According to him, the Senate hopes to avert the incident at the Sugar Regulatory Board where there would be “no government intervention”. He also emphasized that any importation should be just right so as not to affect the farmers.
