QUALIFIED THEFT – An accountant wanted for 67 counts of qualified theft was arrested at Crossing Sawmill, Barangay Himogaan Baybay, Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

The suspect, identified as Jacob Garcia, 24, of Barangay Himogaan Baybay, was arrested on September 22.

His warrant which was issued by Presiding Judge Leoncio Ragay Bancoro of Regional Trial Court Branch 41 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental was issued on September 21, 2022.

The bail set for each count of the case filed against the suspect was at P30,000 each, totaling P2,010,000.

According to Sagay police chief Maj. Roberto Indiape, the cases against Garcia were filed by a gas corporation based in Dumaguete City, where Garcia worked as an accountant.

The suspect has yet to issue any statement regarding his arrest.

Meanwhile, an accountant is a person who practices accounting or accountancy. Accountants who have passed their professional associations’ certification exams can use titles like Chartered Accountant, Chartered Certified Accountant, Certified Public Accountant, or Registered Public Accountant.

Statute grants such professionals certain responsibilities, such as the ability to certify an organization’s financial statements, and they may be held liable for professional misconduct.

Non-qualified accountants may work for a qualified accountant or independently, with no statutory privileges or obligations.

On the other hand, under the provision of Article 310 of the Revised Penal Code, Qualified Theft is a crime of theft or taking, with intent to gain, of a personal property of the owner without the latter’s consent.
