EJ Obiena: “Despite my own training needs, Mam Lydia needs this money more than I do.”
EJ OBIENA — Filipino Olympian Ernest John Obiena pledged to give his reward from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to ailing Filipina sprinter Lydia de Vega.
In his Facebook post last July 28, he thanked those who supported him following his historic World Athletics Championship bronze medal.
To recall, EJ Obiena clinched the bronze medal after clearing 5.94 meters in the finals of the World Athletics Championship in Oregon, USA last July 25 (Manila time).
He went on to pay tribute to Lydia, who is an icon of the Philippine track and field.
EJ, who is set to receive PHP 250,000 reward from the PSC after his achievements in the World Championship, said that Lydia needs the money more than he does for her medical expenses.
“On the flight back to Italy, it occurred to me that despite my own training needs, Mam Lydia needs this money more than I do,” he wrote. “So, I am hereby pledging to gift these 250,000 pesos once paid, directly to the family of Lydia De Vega for her medical expenses.“
To recall, Lydia is suffering from complications brought by Stage 4 breast cancer. Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. has directed the Philippine Sports Commission to extend assistance to her.

EJ also shared that he has met Lydia in Singapore on many occasions. According to him, Lydia “has always been [a] kind, supportive and loving individual”.
Aside from him, he said that his advisor and nutritionist, James and Carol Lafferty, will also pledge the same amount for the ailing Filipina sprinter.
“We hope this makes a difference and gives Mam Lydia added strength to battle this horrible disease. God bless you and give you strength Mam Lydia,” he said.
