World Health Gives Update on Monkeypox Status Amid Outbreak in Non-Endemic Countries
WORLD HEALTH – WHO warned countries about the “real risk” that monkeypox can bring amid its outbreak in non-endemic nations.
Several countries remain in the pursuit of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic which greatly affected almost all nations across the globe. Economies were pulled down, businesses were closed, and lives were lost due to the pandemic.
Cases of COVID-19 have dropped by the World Health Organization (WHO) urges countries not to be complacent. According to the WHO, while there are still cases of coronavirus, the pandemic is not over anywhere.
Unfortunately, amid the fact that many countries have a long way to go still before they can fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, there is another threat – the possible spread of the monkeypox disease.
Unlike COVID-19, monkeypox is not a new case. It is already endemic in several African nations. However, what concerns the WHO now is that cases of monkeypox were recorded in non-endemic countries.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the World Health Organization warned that there is “real” risk that monkeypox will be established in non-endemic countries. Meanwhile, according to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, there is still no recommendation from the UN health agency about vaccination.
Currently, there were no deaths recorded due to monkeypox in non-endemic countries. Most of the outbreaks were recorded in Portugal, Europe, Britain, and Spain.
According to Tedros, there are over 1,000 monkeypox cases now recorded in at least 29 countries that are endemic for the disease. There are also reports of community transmission in some nations.
With regards to the initial symptoms of monkeypox, based on the report, a person may experience a high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and skin rashes that are like chickenpox blisters. WHO suspects that there was an undetected transmission of the disease in some non-endemic countries for some time already but it did not catch attention.
