P3,000 Monthly Aid for PUV Drivers?
MONTHLY AID – Senator Sherwin Gatchalian is pushing for P3,000 monthly assistance for the public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers amid the high fuel costs in the Philippines now.
Currently, many Filipinos are having a hard time coping with the oil price hikes leading to high fuel costs in the Philippines. The prices of diesel and gasoline have reached more than P90 per liter in most fuel stations. In some stations, it surpassed P100 per liter.
The oil price hikes in the country started in January. There is currently a global oil problem and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine is tagged as one of the triggers.
In PH, a lot of people are calling for the suspension of the fuel excise tax. However, Malacañang denied the call saying that the budget has already been allotted to support government projects.
Public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers are appealing to the government saying they cannot anymore bring home an amount that can provide for the needs in their household due to the high prices of fuel.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian is pushing for a monthly aid of P3,000 for PUV drivers amid the high fuel costs in the Philippines now. The target assistance is eyed to support the drivers for five (5) months.
According to Gatchalian, the monthly assistance which is a P4-billion project is bearable compared to the revenue loss in case the fuel excise tax would be suspended. The target beneficiaries are drivers of jeepneys, utility vehicles, buses, and taxis.
Reportedly, more than P150 billion in revenue loss may be incurred by the government if the fuel excise tax would be suspended. Several transport groups are currently calling for a minimum fare increase following the series of oil price hikes. More updates may be posted soon.
