From selling vegetables to turmeric, Miguelina Villasor is now a successful businesswoman
MIGUELINA VILLASOR – A former vegetable vendor is now a successful businesswoman earning P50k per week thanks to turmeric.
Her two kids have finished their studies because of her business while three are now in college.
Miguelina is a resident of Barangay La Union in San Remigio, Antique.
In an interview with PIAAntique, she shared that they were poor before.
She used to sell vegetables and fruits at the market in Sibalom while her husband is a helper at the farm.
In 2012, her family qualified for the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) of the government.
A social worker of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) assigned to oversee her family noticed that they are throwing away the turmeric they did not sell.
The social worker told her that turmeric has lots of health benefits and can generate income if turned into tea.
In 2013 she studied how to process turmeric through the help of the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of DSWD, which gave her PHP10,000 capital.
Eventually, she got a product label.
She started selling at least 20 packs, weighing 100 grams each. She earns 2,000 every week at the time.
She also learned how to make another variant like a mixture of turmeric and ginger- which she called turgin.
Her income increased from 35,000 pesos to P50,000 every week. She’s now able to dispose of 100 packs weekly.
Her products are being sold in Metro Manila and Iloilo, which is why marketing was not difficult for her.
Because of her success, her family was hailed by DSWD as Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya (provincial level) in 2017.
