AFP Activates Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group

On Friday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines activated a new unit dedicated to providing protection to the Vice President.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines said in a statement that the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG) will ensure the security of Vice President-elect Sara Duterte as well as her family.

GMA News Online reported that the activation ceremony was held at the AFP General Headquarters.

Based on the report, AFP Chief of Staff General Andres Centino installed Lt. Col. Rene Giroy of the Philippine Army as the first group commander of the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group.

According to Centino, the Armed Forces of the Philippines saw it fitting to provide the Office of the Vice President (OVP) a dedicated unit that shall “ensure the safety and security of the second-highest-elected official in the country”.

The newly-formed Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group is now a separate unit headed by an O-6 grade officer (rank of Colonel / Navy Captain).

According to Centino, he’s confident that the newly-designated acting VPSPG Commander and the rest of the Officers and Enlisted Personnel entrusted to ensure the security, safety, and welfare of the Vice President and her family shall “perform their responsibilities to the best of their abilities”.

Based on a report, the Vice Presidential Security Detachment was previously attached to the Presidential Security Group (PSG).
