Chel Diokno finished a degree in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines.

He also earned a Juris Doctor of Laws from the Northern Illinois University College of Law where he graduated magna cum laude.

The former dean of the DLSU College of Law is a bar passer in the Philippines and the United States.

As a human rights lawyer, he is the executive director of the Diokno Law Center, and the chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG).

Diokno is running for senator under the ticket of Vice President Leni Robredo and Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan.

On the other hand, Robin Padilla is an action star and staunch supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte. He’s running for senator under the BBM-Sara tandem.

In an interview, Diokno reacted to his comparison with Robin Padilla.

Some netizens don’t seem to accept that Padilla has a better chance of winning than Diokno even though the lawyer is more educated than the well-known action star.

Although Diokno is embarrassed, he understands that there are some who are actually looking at the “track record” of the candidates.

“Nahihiya po ako kay sir Robin Padilla na kami’y pinagsasabong ng mga netizen. Pagdating sa appeal, totoong milya-milya ang lamang niya sa akin. Masakit lang pala pag may nagsasabing hindi nila ako iboboto dahil hindi ako kasing pogi kahit aminado naman ako na totoo ito,” Diokno said.

Even though they are political rivals, Padilla and Diokno have a good relationship with each other.

In fact, last May 4, the actor congratulated Diokno after the latter’s child passed the BAR exam.

Padilla has entered the Top 5 in some surveys while Diokno failed to make it into the top 12.
