Will Bataan Nuclear Power Plant be utilized under BBM administration?
BNPP – Presumptive president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. shared that he is mulling to revive the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.
BNPP is one of the biggest projects of the administration of BBM’s late father Ferdinand Marcos Sr. However, it was not fully utilized because of the various criticisms it received from experts.
At a press conference held on Monday, May 23, BBM shared that South Korea has some recommendations to revive BNPP.
“Napag-usapan namin ng South Korean ambassador yung offer nila at yung nakapunta na dito na expert ng nuclear power para tingnan ang Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, para makita kung ano pa ang puwede pang gawin, kung puwede pang ituloy o kailangan na ba magtayo ng bago,” he said.
In his press conference, Marcos believes the Philippines needs various sources of energy especially since there is already a crisis in the country when it comes to the power supply.
Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) Director Carlo Arcilla said in an interview last March that the Philippines may start running a nuclear power plant in 5 years if the proposed program will proceed without any obstacles.
According to him, South Korea has offered to rehabilitate the Bataan plant for $1.1 billion.
Meanwhile, even some critics of the Marcoses including economist Winnie Monsod is in favor of reviving the BNPP.
