Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc Infected w/ Omicron Variant of COVID-19
Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc announced that he tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
The COVID-19 cases in the Philippines went on an upward trend anew following the holiday season. Several cities in the capital region recorded a surge in their coronavirus cases.
The new spike in the cases prompted the national government to re-impose stricter curbs. Currently, the whole Metro Manila and several other cities across the nation with high cases of COVID-19 are under Alert Level 3 until the end of January.
The new spike in the COVID-19 cases came amid the threat of the possible spread of the Omicron variant in the Philippines. First recorded in South Africa and reported to be a “heavily mutated” variant of coronavirus, it is the current predominant variant in the country.
Several known personalities contracted the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Recently, Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc revealed that he tested positive for the said variant of COVID-19.
According to the Ilocos Norte Governor, he and his close-in staff went through a PCR test last Wednesday and his driver tested positive for COVID-19. He yielded negative results in the PCR test.
Gov. Manotoc said that he and his staff quarantined despite the negative results since they are close contacts of his driver who tested positive for COVID-19. He underwent an antigen test again and he tested positive.
Based on the report, the Ilocos Norte Governor said that he is glad that “it was Omicron and not Delta” because it is “milder”. He stressed that he is vaccinated and he is alright right now.
According to Manotoc, last January 16, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the Omicron variant’s presence in Ilocos Norte. The national government is boosting the vaccination efforts to fight its spread.
