Google Philippines won’t accept election ads for the 2022 campaign and silence periods.

GOOGLE PHILIPPINES — On Wednesday, the tech giant announced that it wouldn’t accept election advertisements during the 2022 campaign and silence periods, including from February 8 to May 9, 2022.

As officially set by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the official campaign period for candidates for president, vice president, senators, and partylists will be from February 8 to May 7, 2022.

Google said that the said measure covered election ads purchased via Display and Video 360, Google Ads, and Shopping platforms that advertisers intended to place on YouTube, Google, and partner properties.

This policy will apply to election advertisements that are purchased through Google Ads, Display and Video 360, and Shopping platforms that advertisers intend to place on Google, YouTube, and partner properties,” Google said in a statement.

The tech giant added that advertisements that promoted or opposed any political party or the candidacy of any person or party for public office were also included in the said measure.

According to Google, the company was focusing its resources and efforts on upcoming election-related initiatives which aimed to help people access accurate and useful information through product features and media literacy programs, to encourage participation in the voting process, and to help protect the integrity of the elections.

The tech giant said that its efforts to support the elections started earlier this year with the #MagpaRehistroKa campaign of the Commission on Elections, among others.

Google also hosted a website on Google Cloud in order to support voter registration campaigns and also launched a magazine in order to boost the fight against misinformation.
