Senator Leila de Lima was having doubts on whether the President will really retire from politics after pulling out from the senatorial race in 2022.

De Lima floated the possibility of President Duterte making a comeback as Davao City mayor after his term as president ends next year.

According to her, President Duterte could replace his son, Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, in the mayoralty race in their home town.

What’s his next political game? He cannot just fade away as he’s got a mountainload of sins and transgressions to answer for,” she said in a statement. “Hindi na ako magugulat kapag magsubstitute ulit siya sa anak niyang si Baste para tumakbong Mayor ng Davao.

President Duterte served as a longtime mayor of Davao City before rising to the presidency in 2016. His daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, took over the helm of the city hall when he’s elected president.

Without fanfare, the President went to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to withdraw his candidacy, a few hours after Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go backed out of the presidential race.

Malacañang said that the President was looking forward to retirement back in his home city of Davao.

According to Cabinet Secretary and acting Presidential Spokesperson Karlo Nograles, the President’s decision to withdraw his candidacy for senator in the 2022 elections was a “personal decision.”
