Mayor Sara, through Atty. Reynold Munsayac, filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) for vice president under Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) as a substitute candidate.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) allowed the substitution of candidates until Monday, November 15. Under the COMELEC’s rules, substitution was accepted if a political candidate died, withdrew, or was disqualified by the poll body.

Mayor Sara’s bid for the vice-presidency came after she withdrew her certificate of candidacy for reelection as Davao City mayor and also resigned from her regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), which further fueled speculation that she’ll run for a national post.

Mayor Sara became the first female local chief executive of Davao City in 2010. She ran for mayor again as a substitute candidate in 2015 after her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, withdrew his reelection bid to run for president in 2016.

Like her father, Mayor Sara trained as a lawyer before entering politics.

Last Thursday, Mayor Sara was sworn in as a member of Lakas-CMD as she took her oath before party president House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez and party chairman Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr.

House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez said in a virtual press conference last November 12 that the party wanted Mayor Sara to run for president in the 2022 elections.
