In an interview on GMA’s Unang Balita on Wednesday, COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez said that the poll body has acknowledged the statement of President Rodrigo Duterte that they should give the political candidates the “space” to conduct in-person political campaigns.

Sang-ayon po kami diyan at katulad ng nababanggit na natin before papayagan naman po natin ang in-person campaigning,” Jimenez said.

Jimenez’s statement came after President Duterte said during his late-night taped public address that the would-be political candidates for the 2022 elections can’t “campaign by just shouting at one corner.”

The President also said that would-be political candidates have to have a “space” where they would limit the attendants or the number of people there.

Jimenez also mentioned that they will come up with a set of rules for the in-person campaign such as the number of people who can participate in a political campaign rally and that it will depend on the alert level of a particular area.

So kunyari kung mahigpit ang alert level doon edi mas konti ang pwedeng mag-attend dun sa mga rally,” Jimenez said.

Meanwhile, COMELEC Director Elaiza David said during the “Laging Handa” public briefing that they’re currently finalizing its guidelines for the conduct of in-person campaigns.

According to David, the poll body encouraged would-be political candidates to exhaust other means and methods or platforms for the campaign.

The COMELEC was likewise reviewing the use of social media for campaigning and admitted that they’re challenged with it as there’s no law on the regulation of its use.
