Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go said in an interview after he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) at the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) last November 13 that he felt the need to step up for the Duterte administration.

Wala na pong standard bearer ang ating administration. Sabi ko, I accepted the challenge,” Go said. “Kung kailangan ko pong mag-step up, alang-alang sa administrasyon at para lang po maipagpatuloy ‘yung pagbabagong inumpisahan ni Pangulong Duterte ay gagawin ko.”

The incumbent senator substituted for PDDS’s presidential aspirant Grepor Belgica, explaining that the Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) was in coalition with Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS).

PDP-Laban-Cusi faction’s presidential aspirant Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa also withdrew his presidential bid in the 2022 elections.

The Dela Rosa-Go tandem was backed by a PDP-Laban faction led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi and was supported by President Rodrigo Duterte.

However, Go, accompanied by the President, proceeded to the COMELEC to withdraw his candidacy for vice president and filed for substitution after Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) to run for vice president under the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD).

I need to save the legacy, save the party, save the Filipino people. Ipagpapatuloy ko po ang pagbabago. Tuloy ang malasakit at tuloy ang serbisyo. Ayaw naming masaktan si Tatay Digong, dahil ayaw naming masaktan ang mga tatay natin na nagbigay ng buhay sa atin,” Go said.

Cusi-led PDP-Laban Secretary-General Melvin Matibag said that Go filed his certificate of candidacy under PDDS since the leadership issue within the ruling political party has yet to be resolved by the Commission on Elections.

Nevertheless, Matibag said that PDP-Laban and PDDS were united in carrying one team for both its local and national candidates.

Meanwhile, vice-presidential aspirant Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said that running for vice president was an opportunity for her to meet her supporters halfway.

She also said that she had decided not to run for president in the 2022 national elections but was met with the “relentless call” for her to run.
