ABS-CBN News reported that members of Bayan USA and allied organizations went to the upscale Manhattan eatery Aretsky’s Patroon wherein they chanted “Roque out of ILC!” and “No justice, no peace!”

As seen in a live video shared by Bayan USA on its Facebook page, guards failed to stop protesters from entering the reception but they’re immediately sent away, leading to a raucous.

The Palace spokesman condemned the act in a statement, claiming that some restaurant staff were injured.

A lawyer formerly outspoken on human rights abuses before President Duterte’s time, Roque was gunning to be among 8 Asia-Pacific nationals to be part of the International Law Commission, who served for five years.
Eleven individuals, including him, were nominated and the period for nomination closed in June.

The International Law Commission’s mandate was to “initiate studies and make recommendations for the purpose… of encouraging the progressive development of international law and its codification.”

Roque said that he was nominated by the Philippine government and that he had two platforms to present.

This included his proposed treaty on equal COVID-19 vaccine access and the need for nations to recognize the permanent presence of states which would possibly sink because of global warming.

Roque’s nomination had been met by vehement opposition, with critics citing what they described as his “dismal” track record on the rule of law.
