The PDP-Laban Cusi faction was convincing President Duterte to run for this position in the 2022 elections.
The Cusi-led Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) was convincing President Rodrigo Duterte to run for this position in the 2022 elections.
Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, who was also the president of the PDP-Laban faction, has confirmed in a statement issued Wednesday that there were efforts by the ruling party to convince the President to run for senator in the 2022 elections.
According to Cusi, if the President would run for senator, he could also be the campaign manager of presidential aspirant Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa and vice-presidential aspirant Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go.
“Now, if the President would not run for vice president because he is firm on his decision not to go back on his word, I said why not run for the Senate so he could bring change there? That will be good for the country,” Cusi said.

Cusi also said that having President Duterte at the Senate would certainly push for PDP-Laban’s reforms in the legislature. As President Duterte enjoyed a high approval rating, Cusi believed that the President would boost the Dela Rosa-Go tandem.
Still, Cusi said that it wouldn’t be a problem for them to go back to their original plan of a Go-Duterte tandem if the President would change his mind and decide to run for vice-presidency.
Senator Go filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for vice president under PDP-Laban last October 2. According to the senator, President Duterte has decided to withdraw his certificate of nomination and acceptance (CONA) so that he’ll be running for the position.
The PDP-Laban fielded Dela Rosa, a senator and a former PNP chief, to run for president in the 2022 elections as they believed he could continue President Duterte’s programs.
Senator Go vowed to continue the administration’s fight against drugs, corruption, and criminality, as well as the “Build, Build, Build” projects or the infrastructure program of the government.
