HIDILYN DIAZ – The country’s first-ever Olympic gold medalist and her boyfriend, strength/conditioning coach Julius Naranjo are now engaged.

The 30-year-old weightlifter from Zamboanga made history as the first-ever Filipino to bag a gold medal in the Olympics in the recently concluded women’s 55-kg weightlifting event.

The country’s pride finished with a total score of 224 kg defeating China’s Liao Qiuyun. She ended the near century-long Olympic gold medal drought of the country since it competed in 1924.

Because of her achievement in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics, several businesses and public officials pledged to give her rewards such as cash, free flights, house and lot, properties, cars and to name a few.

Meanwhile, two months after securing the first-ever Olympic gold for the Philippines, Hidilyn has secured another gold but this time an engagement ring.

Recently, she went to the image-sharing platform, Instagram wherein she flaunted her gold medal at the same time her gold ring while announcing her engagement to her longtime boyfriend.

The couple is set to leave the country today to return to Malaysia for training as she gears up for IWF World Championship slated on December 7 to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

To recall, it was in 2017 when the couple first met at a competition in Turkmenistan.

According to Julius, who’s a Filipino-Japanese, he was based in Guam and did not know that she was a Silver medalist at the time.

Julius said that Hidilyn immediately caught his attention when they first met.

She was about to go to China to start her training for the Olympics when Julius surprised her in 2018 by telling her that he wanted to stay in Manila for good and join her team.
