Voter registration is extended
COMELEC – The Commission on Elections will extend the voter registration from October 11 to 30 after its deadline on September 30.
Due to public clamor and pressure from both houses of Congress, the poll body announced the extension of voter registration.
According to spokesperson James Jimenez, the extension was approved during the Comelec en banc on Wednesday.
But to give way for the filing of certificates of candidacy, voter registration is suspended on the first week of October (October 1-8).
Before its approval, the poll body had twice rejected the calls to extend the registration, as it claimed it would crash crucial preparations for the upcoming elections.
For several days now, people are lining up at designated areas across the nation to register. Many Filipinos are visibly eager to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections.
Comelec had been insistent to finish the voter registration on September 30 for the fear it might result in to delay in other election-related activities such as the loading of data to the vote-counting machines and the printing of ballots.
On the other hand, the poll body said they have already reached their target number of voters for the upcoming polls. Roughly, there are over 62 million voters who have registered.
Registered Filipino voters will get to exercise their rights to vote in the May 9, 2022 elections wherein a new president, vice president, and lawmakers, and local government officials will be named or reelected.
