JULIAN ONGPIN – The son of billionaire Roberto “Bobby” Ongpin made headlines following his arrest due to alleged possession of illegal drugs.
Police sources cited that drugs were found in the room he shared with artist Bree Johnson in San Juan, La Union.
The popular painter was found dead inside the resort room where they stayed and the authorities are still investigating the incident.
But who is Julian Ongpin?
Julian is a 29-year-old angel investor and art patron.
He is the son of Bobby Ongpin, who’s the chairman and CEO of Alphaland Corporation, the developer of the high-end Balesin Island Club Resort off the coast of Quezon Province.
Bobby Ongpin was the minister of trade and industry during the time of former President Ferdinand Marcos.
When the late president was ousted from his office, Bobby Ongpin concentrated on business, which includes interests in property development, mining, and financial services, and to name a few.
At press time, he’s the 22nd richest person in the country, with an estimated net worth of $1.1 billion according to Forbes.
On the other hand, Julian Ongpin serves as an assistant to the chairman of Alphaland Corporation.
He is also the president of Ongpin Angel Investors Corporation. Earlier this year, his family set up a PHP1 billion fund to invest in promising Filipino startups.
According to PEP.ph, he is a direct descendant of Filipino painter Damian Domingo.
His grandfather Alfonso Ongpin was a renowned collector of masterpieces courtesy of Juan Luna, Felix Hidalgo, and Fernando Amorsolo.
It was in September 2015 when he opened the Julian Ongpin Young Artists (JOYA) gallery at Alphaland Makati Place.
