Citing a report from state news agency MAP, Reuters reported that Moroccan pharmaceutical firm Sothema (Société Thérapeutique Marocaine) will soon start production of five million Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine doses per month in the North African country.

The said announcement was made at a ceremony chaired by King Mohammed VI during which the Moroccan government, Sothema, and Sinopharm also signed deals to produce the COVID-19 vaccine in Morocco, which had a population of about 36 million.

Based on a report on MAP, the said project will involve an investment of around USD 500 million. However, the said report didn’t say when production will start.

The country had received 20.4 million COVID-19 vaccine doses so far and planned to vaccinate everyone over the age of 17. Morocco had registered 534,550 coronavirus infections and 9,319 deaths due to COVID-19.
