Facebook had followed in the footsteps of Microsoft and launched a web app of its cloud gaming platform for iPad and iPhone after a lot of back and forth and Apple rejecting Facebook’s standalone iOS app version on the App Store.

Apple had seen a lot of criticism from Facebook, Microsoft, and more about its policy to not allow apps on iOS that function as game services. Facebook reportedly even started building an antitrust suit against Apple over it earlier this year.

Technically, Facebook did launch its iOS gaming app last August but it had to remove all the games in order to get approved – reducing it to a place to watch others stream.

The Verge recently reported that the Facebook gaming web app was available for iPad and iPhone. In a statement, Facebook’s vice president of gaming Vivek Sharma told The Verge that web applications were the only option for streaming cloud games on iOS at the moment.

These roadblocks mean players are prevented from discovering new games, playing cross-device, and accessing high-quality games instantly in native iOS apps — even for those who aren’t using the latest and most expensive devices,” Sharma told The Verge.

9to5Mac reported that Facebook’s gaming service was still young and said that it had 1.5 million users per month. But it’s added popular titles to its library such as Asphalt 9 and Assassin’s Creed: Rebellion to expanding beyond more casual titles such as Words with Friends, Angry Birds, and more.

However, some of the challenges that remain for iOS web gaming include Facebook not being able to take its users from its main mobile app to its web-based gaming service, lack of push notifications, sound being turned off by default, and graphics limitations.
