An expert hoped that companies manufacturing Sputnik V and Sinovac vaccines will release data on the efficacy of their COVID-19 vaccines against the Delta COVID-19 variant.
ABS-CBN News reported that the director for the Genomics Health Program of the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) hoped that companies manufacturing Sputnik V and Sinovac jabs consider releasing data on the efficacy of their respective COVID-19 vaccines against the Delta COVID-19 variant.
Dra. Eva Maria Dela Paz said in a public press briefing that she’s hopeful that Sputnik V and Sinovac could present studies and data as there were only “few” studies concerning the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines to the Delta COVID-19 variant.
However, she maintained that any COVID-19 vaccine can provide protection against emerging COVID-19 variants.
As per the report, efficacy trials against the Delta COVID-19 variant were still ongoing for companies, such as Moderna, Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
“Kahit anong bakuna ay makakatulong na pangunahing panangga sa kahit anong variant. Siguro lang ang mga Sinovac at ‘yung Spunik sana makapaglabas sila ng datos ukol sa pagiging epektibo nito kagaya ng nakita sa Pfizer at AstraZeneca,” Dela Paz said when asked on the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines.

Sinovac, produced by Sinovac Biotech, constituted most of the Philippines’ COVID-19 vaccine stockpile, with about 11 million COVID-19 vaccine doses arriving in the country.
So far, the Philippines had received 180,000 Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine doses produced by Russia’s Gamaleya Institute.
Dela Paz cited studies made in Scotland and England where it was shown that Pfizer and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines were 88% and 66%, respectively, effective among fully vaccinated individuals.
She also encouraged the public to get vaccinated against the coronavirus disease, aside from enforcing strict border controls in order to avoid local transmission, as all Delta COVID-19 variant cases recorded in the Philippines came from overseas.
