Chiz will run under the National People’s Coalition and he wants to bring his experience as governor to empower local government units (LGUs) through legislation.

“I confirm Senate President Tito Sotto’s statement that I do plan to run for the Senate. I do plan to place my name once again in the ballot for the Senate in the hope that I will be able to do my part in helping our country recover from this pandemic after this administration,” Chiz Escudero said.

Escudero previously served as a senator from 2007 to 2019 before becoming governor of Sorsogon.

Prior to this, Chiz served as a congressman from 1998 to 2007 in the first district of Sorsogon.

Although Chiz Escudero leads in senatorial surveys, he said he should not be overconfident because there are many who will run in 2022 to become a senator.

“There are 10 reelectionists unless they are running for higher office and you’re looking at 8 to 12 former senators who intend to go back to the Senate, and about 5 to 8 Cabinet secretaries, incumbent secretaries who intend to run as well. We are not even counting showbiz and other known personalities,” he explained.
