FDA Director-General Eric Domingo on Wednesday evening revealed during a televised Cabinet meeting that the Philippine government was set to allow the use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for those aged 12 to 15 years.

According to Domingo, Pfizer applied for the EUA amendment last May 20 in a bid to cover the said age group, adding that local experts studying the application had “favorable” recommendations so far.

Yung atin pong mga experts ay in-evaluate. In fact, early this evening, I already got the recommendations of our experts and [they were] very favorable,” Domingo noted.

The said development came after the Food and Drug Administration in the United States (US FDA) earlier this month also expanded its emergency use authorization (EUA) for the said vaccine to include those aged 12 to 15 years old in the United States.

Currently, the said vaccine was only allowed for use for people aged 16 and up in the Philippines.

Earlier this month, the Philippines received 193,000 Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine doses — a donation from the WHO-led COVAX facility — which had been rolled out in some major cities including in Metro Manila.

The Philippines was also expecting the arrival of a bulk shipment of the said vaccine brand — around 2.2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses — this second quarter.
