H.E.R. recently shared about her Filipino roots.
Grammy and Oscar winner H.E.R. had recently opened up about how her Filipino roots inspired her love for making music.
The 23-year-old singer-songwriter, who was born and raised in the United States to an African-American father and a Filipino mother, told CNN Philippines’ New Day on Friday how she found her voice growing up in a close-knit family that was supportive of her craft.
“Filipinos are so family-oriented! My family has always supported me. They’ll be in the house, pull up the karaoke and be like, come on, sing ‘Maging Sino Ka Man.’ They always pushed me to hone my talents and gifts,” she shared.
According to her, she would do music with or without accolades, with or without the recognition because it’s part of who she was, adding that she had to love it regardless of how much success.
She noted that her mother always “kept her humble” and also reminded her to “always thank God for blessings”. In addition, H.E.R. shared other things that kept her connected to her Filipino roots — family and food. According to her, she learned how to make kare-kare during the quarantine and that was her favorite food.

She then shared that she grew up with her grandparents in the house and one good thing about having a Filipino grandmother was that most immigrants would take care of their parents
H.E.R. also shared that she had her uncle, her mother’s brother, living in the house and it’s always a full house all the time. She noted how she learned to embrace both her Asian and Black roots and put them to her advantage in her music career.
Moreover, H.E.R. thanked her fellow Filipinos for supporting her craft and also hoped that she could go back to the Philippines when everything returned to normal.
