In a statement, Pfizer and BioNTech said that phase 3 clinical trials carried out on 2,260 adolescents in the US demonstrated “100 percent” efficacy and robust antibody responses.

According to Pfizer chief executive Albert Bourla, they planned to submit those data to the US Food and Drug Administration as a proposed amendment to their Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in the coming weeks and to other regulators worldwide as well, with the hope of starting to inoculate the said age group before the start of the next school year.

We plan to submit these data to (US regulator) FDA as a proposed amendment to our Emergency Use Authorization in the coming weeks and to other regulators around the world, with the hope of starting to vaccinate this age group before the start of the next school year,” Bourla said.

The chief executive of BioNTech said that the results showing high protection for teens were “very encouraging” given the trends they had seen in recent weeks regarding the spread of the B.1.1.7 variant (UK COVID-19 variant).
