Pfizer started its COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial in young children.
Pfizer on Thursday said that the company started a clinical trial for its COVID-19 vaccine in children under the age of 11, an early sign of the next stage of the global vaccination campaign.
In a statement, Pfizer told AFP News that the company and BioNTech had dosed the first healthy children in a “global Phase 1/2/3 continuous study” in order to further evaluate the safety, immunogenicity, and tolerability of their COVID-19 vaccine.
“Together with our partner BioNTech, we have dosed the first healthy children in a global Phase 1/2/3 continuous study to further evaluate the safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. We are proud to start this much-needed study for children and families eagerly awaiting a possible vaccine option,” the company said in a statement to AFP News.

According to details posted on the site clinicaltrials.gov, Pfizer was testing three different dosing levels for use in the age group.
In a report on Manila Bulletin, Pfizer was already testing the COVID-19 vaccine shots in children aged 12 to 15, and its emergency use authorization (EUA) in the United States covered people aged 16 years old and above.
Pfizer joined AstraZeneca and Moderna in testing their COVID-19 vaccines in younger children, while Johnson & Johnson had plans to follow.
Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that the results from the clinical trial were expected in the second half of this year. Sharon Castillo, a spokesperson for the pharmaceutical company, said that the company hoped to vaccinate younger children early next year.
