Netizens Slammed Duterte For “Simple” Birthday Meal

DUTERTE “SIMPLE” BIRTHDAY – Netizens slammed Senator Bong Go’s photo showing President Rodrigo Duterte’s “simple” birthday meal.

Yesterday marked Duterte’s 76th birthday. However, unlike most Presidents, Duterte wanted a humble celebration – or so it seems? Following the upload, netizens cited another photo showing the entirety of the scene.

Initially, Go’s photo showed Duterte blowing a candle from a “rice cake”. On his Facebook, Go captioned: “Nag Blow ng Kandila ngayon lang! Simpleng pananghalian lamang”.

However, zooming out, you’d see an entire feast including a full Lechon. Because of this, netizens said that the photo was simply an act while some said it was a “performance art”. Additionally, others noted how nice the home was and it even had a “gaming chair” visible behind Duterte.

For the longest time, Duterte has portrayed values of simplicity. Furthermore, he has always shown that unlike other high-profile politicians, he lives a simple life, much like ordinary citizens.

Naturally, this appeals to the masses. Back in 2016, Duterte attended an event with a broken shoe. It was unclear how it got broken but according to a pro-Duterte website, supporters who mobbed Duterte was the reason.

According to the site, in his 2016 rally, “thousands of his supporters has stepped on his shoe”. Still, netizens and critics questioned the photo with others being doubtful.

One netizen commented: “A normal person would do something about this, so why didn’t he? It looks to me like a stunt, if anything”.

Meanwhile, for his recent birthday, others said that Go’s photo of Duterte is “more of an insult to the people you are stealing from. It’s like you are making fun of their plight”.

  1. Sorry to say that in this island and parts of Visayas, lechon is a common staple in birthdays and other kinds of celebrations. Even in remote areas, many people raise hogs and pigs in preparation for some celebrations. It’s in the culture.

  2. President Duterte is truly and genuinely one of the best leader of this country. He is a true filipino and for the filipino at heart and mind. Tatay Digong, continue your good work. We certainly are proud of the achievements you have done for our country. Progress and development were ubiquitously seen in the Philippines under your servant-leadership style of governance. We pray for good health and wishing you a happy birthday!
