PARADED LIKE ZOMBIES – Recently, several quarantine violators in Silay City, Negros Occidental were allegedly made to parade like zombies on the streets.

The incident went viral and even the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chimed in. According to the CHR, the incident degraded the individuals involved.

As such, the police chief of Silay City said he had no intention of degrading the individuals who were caught violating quarantine protocol. According to an interview with CNN, he said:

Wala akong intention na ipahiya sila. ‘Yung sa atin lang ma-maintain nila yung physical distancing para makaiwas sila ng Covid-19

Kung may intention ako na masama sa kanila, bakit di ko sila ilagay sa police station para magsiksikan sila. Hindi ko ginawa iyon, dahil tinitignan ko safety nila”.

Meanwhile, lawmakers such as Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said that the incident was “unnecessary”. Furthermore, he said that actions such as the parade adds to the people’s growing distrust of police.

Currently, the Philippines has reported over 500,000 cases of COVID-19. Of that number more than 26,000 are considered active cases. But, hopes remain high as the first COVID-19 vaccine doses are set to arrive next week.
