Dr. Winlove Mojica, a board-certified dermatologist, posted a tweet suggesting to just put the ashes in a paper envelope instead of applying them directly on the faithful’s forehead.

Mojica also reminded Catholic priests to sanitize their hands first before giving out the ash to the faithful.

Put the ash in a small paper envelope (not plastic) and allow the person to put the ash on his/her forehead. Or maybe people will get scared with the UK variant and not go? No. From experience we really can’t stop these traditions,” Mojica added.

It was last January when the Vatican asked to just “sprinkle the ashes” on top of the faithful’s heads rather than applying them directly to the forehead.

Meanwhile, Catholic churches in the Philippines were already prepared for tomorrow’s observance as the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) ordered Catholic priests to “sprinkle the ashes on the head of the faithful” in order to prevent having a contact.

Catholic priests usually imposed ashes on the faithful’s forehead during Ash Wednesday. However, the said tradition changed because of the COVID-19 threat.
