The Philippines is divided into regions (Rehiyon), province (Lalawigan), cities (Lungsod), and municipalities (Bayan). It is the usual division of areas in different countries all around the world.

Under the Local Government Code of 1991 (Republic Act No. 7160), cities are under three categories such as highly urbanized cities, independent component cities, and component cities. Cities are usually governed by their municipal charters.
