Numerous Philippine Businesses Struggle Due to Age Restriction Policy Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
Some businesses in the Philippines are already struggling due to the age restriction policy in compliance with the health protocols.
Several businesses and entrepreneurs along Metro Manila are struggling due to age restrictions. The pandemic task force guidelines prohibit children 15 years old below to go outside of their homes.
Numerous street food stalls such as fishball and barbeque stands have shut down for having no customers. Most customers visiting the street food stalls before the coronavirus pandemic were children.
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua said that the stricter measure is good but the economy could not recover if the government would continue to limit the businesses.
“Because if the family activities don’t come back, we cannot expect the economy to also grow like before. As I mentioned, we are a consumption-driven economy and a big part of that is family-driven,” Chua said.
The Department of Trade and Industry chief Ramon Lopez is also requesting the government to loosen the age restrictions as long as health protocols are observed.
“Dahil po diyan, kung tayo ay talagang nagnanais makabalik at maka-recover ang ating ekonomiya, kailangan talagang dahan-dahanin din natin ang pagluluwag pagdating sa age restriction,” Lopez said.
