Pfizer To Apply For COVID-19 Vaccine Approval In Japan — Report

Pfizer would apply for COVID-19 vaccine approval in Japan, according to a report.

Pfizer on Friday would request a formal approval in Japan of its COVID-19 vaccine as the first supplier in the country to do so, according to a report.

Citing Kyodo News report, ABS-CBN News reported that the Japanese government already had agreed with Pfizer to receive a supply of 120 million COVID-19 vaccine doses that’s enough for 60 million people in Japan or roughly half of the country’s population.

The United States and United Kingdom had already started administering the COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech SE, while Singapore and several other countries were expected to follow suit.

However, concerns remained over its safety as local authorities in the United States said that a health care worker in Alaska had shown a serious allergic reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Similar allergic reactions by two health care workers had also been reported in UK.

Earlier in the month, Japan’s parliament had enacted a law to cover the costs for residents to be inoculated, with the recent resurgence in coronavirus infections showing no signs of abating.

As inoculation could start as early as March, the Japanese government planned to ask municipalities to prepare venues in addition to medical institutions and ready systems to accept reservations.

The COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech was projected to be delivered in batches of 1,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses, but these vaccines need to be stored at -75°C or lower and to be administered within approximately 10 days.
