Indigenous Aeta Group in Pampanga Experienced Discrimination for Eating ‘Bats’ Amid Health Crisis

University of the Philippines and the United Nations Economic, Social, and Cultural Organization’s study causes challenge to the indigenous group in Porac, Pampanga over bat diet.
The Kapampangans were allegedly accusing the Aetas as the source of the virus for eating bats. The indigenous people are experiencing discrimination and being avoid whenever they go down to town.
“Sinasabi ng mga taga-patag na sa Aeta nanggaling ang COVID-19 na naka-ugat sa diskriminasyon,” The non Aytas of Pampanga were reportedly spreading the rumor that the COVID-19 virus came from the IPs as they too eat bats, where the virus is reported to have emanated from in China,” researcher July Sumayop said.
The Pampanga Aetas are also experiencing difficulties getting help from the government aside from the discrimination. The indigent people are also taking precautionary measures making contact with outsiders fearing that they might carry the virus to their village.
Sumayop reported that 27 only out of 250 Aeta families were able to receive Social Amelioration Program. Aetas also lacked of access to protective equipment such as face masks and face shields.
