In a report on GMA Network’s “24 Oras” on Monday, Roberto and Liezl Demaisip had been nurses in Brighton, England for 20 years now.

Roberto and Liezl said that 2020 was their “most challenging year” on the job yet.

It was last March when Roberto caught the coronavirus disease from one of his patients. According to Roberto, they had a patient coughing in front of him and he felt the typical symptoms of COVID-19 after two days.

Meanwhile, Liezl had tested positive for antibodies against COVID-19, suggesting that Liezl became infected but remained asymptomatic.

As soon as vaccine maker Pfizer rolled out its COVID-19 vaccine in the United Kingdom, Roberto and Liezl immediately volunteered to get vaccinated since they’re both assigned at high-risk wards in the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Wala naman akong naramdaman, pero subconsciously, dahil naka-receive ka ng vaccine, iniisip ko na ‘Ay, may mararamdaman ako.’ Wala akong naramdaman,” Roberto said, while his partner Liezl felt feverish after getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

Roberto and Liezl also said that they chose to get vaccinated in order for them to protect themselves and their three children and it’s also a preventive measure for their supposed trip to Canada to be with their family for the holiday season.

However, on the day of their flight, Canada halted the entry of passenger flights from the United Kingdom after a new strain of SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that caused COVID-19 — was discovered in the country.

The new strain of COVID-19 was said to be 70% more transmissible than the current one.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson attributed the uptick in infections to the new strain of COVID-19 and also placed London and parts of England under a “stricter lockdown” in order to stem the spread of coronavirus disease.

Local health authorities earlier mentioned that the new strain of COVID-19 had yet to reach the Philippines.
