The World Health Organization had identified 42 “candidate vaccines” at the stage of clinical trials as of mid-October, up from 11 in mid-June.
Of these, 10 were at the most advanced Phase 3 stage in which the effectiveness of a COVID-19 vaccine was tested on a large scale — generally tens of thousands of people across different continents.
Soumya Swaminathan, the chief scientist at WHO, said in a tweet that the news from the two pharmaceutical companies should urge all developers of COVID-19 vaccines to “continue with clinical trials”.
“The world needs several safe, effective & affordable vaccines to end this pandemic,” Soumya said.
