PNP will continue its strict BMI monitoring on police officers, according to PNP chief.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) will continue its strict monitoring of the body mass index (BMI) of police officers, according to PNP chief.

This, as the said mechanism was earlier suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PNP chief Gen. Debold Sinas on Monday explained in a press briefing that he already spoke with the PNP Directorate for Human Resource and Doctrine Development (DHRDD) for the continuation of the BMI monitoring in order to help obese police officers get back in shape.

Sinas also said that it was okay for police officers to gain weight, but not at an excessive level.

Kasi for the last nine months because of the pandemic, parang konti na lang ‘yung nag-eexercise at gumalaw-galaw. Naging stagnant tayo, so ibabalik namin ‘yun,” Sinas said.

Sinas even went on saying that he himself had been following his diet regimen and exercise.

Earlier this year, former PNP chief and now retired Gen. Archie Gamboa signed a memorandum which stated that police officers should be denied the schooling they need for their promotion if they failed to comply with the body mass index (BMI) requirement.

Sinas, who was still the director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) when the said memorandum was issued, then launched a weight loss program for personnel of the Metro Manila police force in order to help them become physically fit as they responded to crime incidents in the said region.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defined body mass index (BMI) as an indicator of high body fatness, and which could be used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
