Northern Samar Mayor had succumbed to coronavirus disease (COVID-19)

The mayor of Palapag town in Northern Samar had succumbed to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on early morning of November 6, 2020.

Provincial Information Officer Rei Echano said that Palapag, Northern Samar Mayor Manuel Aoyang was said to have contracted the coronavirus infection last week during the onslaught of Typhoon “Rolly” amid the continuous increase in coronavirus cases in the province.

Aoyang was then confined in a private hospital in Tacloban City wherein he reportedly passed away at around 1:30 in the morning.

Northern Samar Police Provincial Director Police Col. Arnel Apud said that he would be immediately cremated in Palapag as pursuant to the health protocols set by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF-EID).

In a phone interview, Palapag town’s health officer Dr. Delia Chy said that the entire town was mourning and the flag at the municipal building was already at half-staff in order to show respect to the late mayor.

Northern Samar had recorded a total of 822 coronavirus cases wherein 399 of which were still active.

According to the Provincial Health Office, 414 COVID-19 cases had already been recorded, while 10 patients died due to coronavirus disease.

The province remained under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) until November 17, 2020, and It had also declared a two-week moratorium on the acceptance of locally stranded individuals (LSIs).

Meanwhile, the Department of Health had recorded a total of 389,725 coronavirus cases in the Philippines as of 4:00 p.m. of November 5, 2020, wherein 32,773 of which were still active.

A total of 349,543 COVID-19 cases had already been recorded, while 7,409 patients died due to coronavirus disease.
