Government To Buy AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine Too, Says DOST Official

The Philippine government would also buy AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine too, according to DOST official.

An official from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Friday said that the Philippine government would also buy doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

This, after senior officials said that the country had secured and would get 2.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.

DOST’s Philippine Council for Health Research and Development Dr. Jaime Montoya was referring to the tripartite agreement between the Philippine government, AstraZeneca, and the private sector for 2.6 million COVID-19 vaccine doses.

“Initial [purchase] lang po ito, in the next few days, we expect to sign those (vaccine deals) funded by the government and maybe the private sector also, ” Montoya said in an online briefing.

Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion earlier said that the private sector was seeking to purchase 2.5 million to 3 million of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire earlier announced that British firm AstraZeneca was eyeing to conduct clinical trials for its COVID-19 vaccine in the country.

Vergeire also said that AstraZeneca was able to complete all documentary requirements and submitted for evaluation to the Vaccine Experts Panel (VEP) and the Ethics Review Board.
