Velasco assumed the said position a day before Congress convened for a special session to continue budget deliberations.

According to Velasco, he accepted this “one in a lifetime challenge” to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives of the 18th Congress.

As per the report, Velasco also thanked President Rodrigo Duterte, Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go.

According to him, he thanked the President — who was a man of his word and who had a single word — for serving as a good example and for inspiring young government servants like him that being from the province would not hinder them to serve.
