Phivolcs Monitors Four Volcanoes Under Abnormal Conditions
The state volcanology agency Phivolcs is currently monitoring four volcanoes including Taal Mayon, Bulusan and Kanlaon under abnormal conditions.
On Tuesday (September 29, 2020), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported the latest updates regarding four of the most active volcanoes in the country.
Phivolcs is now monitoring Taal in Batangas, Mayon in Albay, Bulusan in Sorsogon, and Kanlaon in Negros Island after showing signs of unrest and irregularities. The agency continues to perform its job despite the reduction of its proposed budget for 2021.
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum also explained that the four volcanoes could generate steam-driven explosion. He also prohibited the residents in the area to enter the danger zone for their own safety.
“At Alert Level 1, all the 4 mentioned volcanoes earlier can actually have a steam-driven explosion… people then should not go inside their danger zones,” Solidum said.
Solidum said that Taal started inflating again after the decrease of its activity since January. Mayon is slightly inflating again from its base.
