#PaalamDuterte took over the Twitter trending spot after President Rodrigo Duterte announced in his televised speech on Monday, September 28 that he wanted to step down.

He said: “Ewan ko kung sabihin ko ito sa inyo. I offered to resign as President. Kasi nagsasawa na ako. In my years of government, wala nang katapusan itong corruption. Mahirap talagang piligin. ‘Yung mga pastillas, hanggang ngayon. It is being committed every day. Can you stop it? You cannot.”

One of the reasons cited by the president is the endless corruption in the country including the “Pastillas Scam” at the Bureau of Immigration.

The modus operandi is called “pastillas” because money is combined with bond paper like the famous local delicacy.

According to Senator Risa Hontiveros in a previous statement, the bribe money given to corrupt immigration officials and employees in exchange for seamless entry into the Philippines by the Chinese has reached a total of P10 billion.

The senate is still investigating the pastillas controversy within the Bureau of Immigration.

Although the president did not mention it, one of those being attacked today on the issue of corruption is the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or PhilHealth.

PhilHealth corruption first surfaced after retired PhilHealth anti-fraud legal officer Thorrsson Montes Keith revealed in the Senate that the so-called ‘mafia’ had pocketed fifteen billion worth of funds in the state-run insurance company.

Meanwhile, the #PaalamDuterte is still trending on Twitter with more than14,000 tweets as of posting.

Along with #PaalamDuterte, Leni or Vice President Leni Robredo is also trending.

Netizens reacted differently to the president’s message.
