Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI was “extremely frail” after visiting his brother in Germany, according to a German newspaper.
Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI became seriously ill and was “extremely frail” after visiting his brother in Germany last June.
This, as German newspaper Passauer Neue Presse reported in its Monday edition that a former pope was “extremely frail”, adding that he was suffering from erysipelas of the face.
According to Healthline, erysipelas was a bacterial infection in the skin’s upper layer and it was similar to cellulitis.
Peter Seewald, a biographer of Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, reportedly visited Benedict in Rome last Saturday in order to present him with his biography.
Citing Peter Seewald’s response, a German newspaper reported that Benedict’s memory and thinking were quick, but his voice was “hardly audible” at the moment.
Despite Benedict’s illness, a German newspaper also reported that he was “optimistic” and declared that he might possibly take up his pen again if his strength increased again.
Benedict’s visit marked his first trip out of Italy since his resignation last 2013. His brother, Georg Ratzinger, has died at the age of 96.
