4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Calayan, Cagayan

EARTHQUAKE – A 4.4 magnitude quake hit Calayan Cagayan early today, August 29, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The nations and territories lying along the Pacific Ring of Fire are popularly known as earthquake-prone areas. The Philippines is one of the countries lying along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Daily, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or more commonly called as PHIVOLCS record several quakes in the different parts of the country. They release a bulletin that contains the details of such natural events.

PHIVOLCS releases the location of the quake, its epicenter and depth of focus, and the time and date it hit an area. The agency also note whether or not there are expected damages and aftershocks of a quake.

For today, August 29, PHIVOLCS recorded a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in Cagayan at 04:57 in the morning. The quake was located at 19.38°North, 121.23°East – 027 km North 67° West of Calayan.

PHIVOLCS stated that the quake was tectonic in origin. It has a depth of 006 kilometers. An instrumental intensity III was recorded by the agency in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte.

In the bulletin it released, PHIVOLCS stated that there are no damages expected of the quake. Furthermore, no aftershocks is expected of the said natural occurrence.
