United States Congressman John Lewis died at the age of 80
United States Congressman John Lewis on late Friday (US time) died at the age of 80 due to pancreatic cancer. John’s passing was confirmed by his family.
In a statement, the Lewis family said that it was with “inconsolable grief” and “enduring sadness” that they had announced the passing of John Lewis as he was respected and honored as the “conscience” of the US Congress and also an “icon” of American history.
The Lewis family also said that they knew John as “a loving father and brother”, adding that he dedicated his life to “non-violent activism” and became an “outspoken advocate” in the struggle for equal justice in the United States.

John Lewis died on the same day as Rev. Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian, a 95-year-old civil rights leader. In a report on CNN, Lewis and Vivian’s death came as the United States was still grappling with “racial upheaval” in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
John’s cause of death was due to pancreatic cancer, while Vivian’s cause of death was due to “natural causes”.
Lewis previously went to the Black Lives Matter Plaza in front of the White House together with Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
