DOH Officials, Staff ‘Affected’ By Ombudsman Probe, Says Vergeire

DOH officials and staff were “affected” by the Ombudsman probe, according to DOH Usec. Vergeire.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the officials and staff of the Department of Health (DOH) could help but get “affected” by the investigation being conducted by the Office of the Ombudsman with regards to its coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) response efforts.

This, as DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in an interview on GMA Network’s Unang Balita that DOH staff were doing their best, adding that they had been working overtime and most of them had even contracting the coronavirus disease.

Vergeire also said that the motu proprio investigation being conducted by the Office of the Ombudsman — which was announced by Ombudsman Samuel Martires last Wednesday — “surprised” them, yet she added that the DOH was willing to cooperate with the investigation.

On Wednesday, Ombudsman Samuel Martires said that he directed the creation of two additional investigating teams who would investigate the alleged anomalies and irregularities that were committed by DOH staff and officials — including DOH Secretary Francisco Duque — in relation to DOH’s response during the pandemic.

However, Vergeire denied that the Department of Health was submitting inaccurate and dated data to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID). She also said that the Department of Health had taken steps — including hiring more encoders and partnering with private sectors — in order to ensure “timely” and “accurate” data processing.
